In January of 2009, Heli Putz and I were able to accomplish a serious first ascent on the Mammutwall of Krippenstein.
Bolts were only used at the anchors, in between we only used 3 pegs and 2 peckers, the rest was protected with ice screws and stoppers.
Planet Watch took this opportunity to make a documentary film about this ascent. In order to receive the best possible pictures, a camera cran was installed on a podest in 180 meter height. This podest, designed by Heli Putz, is the largest of its kind with 2,5x2,5m to be used in a rock face.
Some actions of the film were set in the Dachstein Caves.
The Dachstein Caves are only open during the summer. However they can be used year round for special reasons. Due to the limited growth of ice, it ws only possible to climb in 2 areas. The quality of ice is very loose, and therefore very difficult to climb. To get a proper grip on the ice with the ice climbing tools, the outer layer of the ice has to be removed. Climbing on this 3000 year old ice is one of a kind experience. Special thanks to Günter Göberl, for doing such a great job, and also to the Dachstein caves employees.
